Renfrew Defence Lawyers were established in 2010 as a local law firm. We have offices in Paisley and Renfrew. Due to the popularity of the firm we represent clients throughout the whole of Scotland in relation to all aspects of Criminal Law and Children’s Hearing proceedings. We have a number of solicitors with a combined experience in excess of 70 years.
Each case has its own surrounding facts, circumstances and complexities. As a result, each individual case will be considered and a fee agreed in relation to representation. We offer an initial consultation which is free of charge with no obligations where an appropriate level of fee for representation can be agreed.

The Appeal Court
The Court of Criminal Appeal sits within the High Court of Justiciary at Lawnmarket in Edinburgh. It hears appeals from summary and solemn level prosecutions in Scotland.
The High Court
The High Court of Justiciary is the most senior Criminal Court in Scotland. It sits at three permanent locations in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
The Sheriff Court
The majority of prosecutions in Scotland are dealt with in the Sheriff Courts. There are currently 46 Sheriff Courts in Scotland with some earmarked for closure in the coming years.
The Justice of The Peace Court
Justice of the Peace courts deal with low-level summary prosecutions in Scotland.

Ruth Menzies

Ruth has a keen interest in the Childrens Hearing System and has successfully challenged decisions of the Children’s Panel by appealing to the Sheriff Court. She is dedicated to securing the return of children to their family homes following removal by Social Work Services. Ruth is able to oppose social work recommendations and fights tirelessly to have children returned to the community where they can live independently and with their liberty.
Ruth has also represented a number of clients across Scotland in the criminal courts securing acquittals following trial.

Fiona Clark
Office Manager
Fiona has played a major role in the expansion of the company and decided to embark on the route to becoming a qualified solicitor in 2019. She successfully completed the Law Society of Scotland Professional Examinations in July 2021 and is due to complete the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Robert Gordon University in July 2022.
Fiona has a keen interest in all areas of criminal law however has a particularly interested in homicide cases and serious organised crime.

What are the fees?

Will I be eligible for Legal Aid?
Even if you're working or planning to plead guilty, you may well be eligible for Legal Aid. If you are likely to qualify for Legal Aid, we will first discuss it with you. We will represent you at a competitive rate if you are not eligible for Legal Aid.
The Police want to speak to me, what do I do?
A Solicitor may accompany you if the Police want to interview you under caution. We are available 24/7 to accompany you to the Police Station. Our firm is registered with the Scottish Legal Aid Board so that we can provide you with Legal Aid and attend the Police Station with you.
Do I have to pay for representation at the police station?
If you are detained at a police station or questioned by someone under their care, you have the right to receive free and independent legal advice. If ever you find yourself in such a situation, please don't hesitate to contact us for prompt assistance no matter what time it is.
